The U.S Fish & Wildlife Service described the Nene (par 1), “This regal goose is Hawai‘i’s state bird. The Nene measures between 22 to 26 inches in length, has a black head and bill, yellow-buff cheeks, a buff neck with dark furrows, and partially webbed between their toes enables them to walk more easily on the rugged lava flows.” They were found in Hawaii and scientists believe that they were in Hawaii before 1778 when Captain James Cook arrived, said U.S Fish & Wildlife Service (par 2). The problem of the Nene is they almost vanished years ago. They are dumb and don't care if a dangerous animal approaches or not; they think everyone is peaceful to them. For example in Hawaii if a car drove in their way, they don't care; they will walk in front of it, and they could be killed because of that. According to Ladywildlife (n.d.), the Nene geese in 1949 were less than 30 and they were the only Nene geese in the world. According to Ladywildlife (n. d.,) nowadays there are 750 Nene geese who live in the wild. Therefore, they are still few, and there are not many of them. One of the problems is the wild animals that humans brought to Hawaii; for example, pigs, dogs, and some other animals. Some of these animals eat some of the Nene geese and some destroy the lands where it is good for Nene geese to breed in. There is another thing; the Nene were not afraid of them, they will not run away so they need somebody to protect them and this is the problem, they became dependent on humans to protect them. Finally, the Nene is the State bird of Hawaii and there are a few of them, and they only exist in Hawaii. If they disappear for any reason like diseases or anything else, nobody can bring them back; they are very important for Hawaii, their uniqueness made them in this situation and for all these things they must be protected and saved.

In order to save and protect the Nene geese three things must be done. First, the government and the people in Hawaii must pay money in order to save the Hawaiian Nene bird. Second, the government of Hawaii should contact the people who have big lands in Hawaii to help keep the Nene in their lands. Finally, the government or the people who are in charge of the Nene should let a few of the Nene go to the wild and let them learn how to protect themselves.

The Government of Hawaii and the people should pay more money in many ways to keep the Nene geese alive and protect them. Zoos could use more money to build shelter to keep some of the Nene geese there, feed them, and to be protected from any disease or wild animal, so when anything happened to the Nene outside the zoos they still have some of them left. One of the ways are buying some tracking devices and putting them in the Nene’s feathers and tracking them whereever they go so they can collect information about them and study their life. These devices are not expensive, and the Government should bring them. The Government should raise the taxes in order to do this; people mostly don’t pay money by themselves, they just get scared when they need to pay money, and even if it is something important, people will still think about it. However, they will pay if they understood that this is to keep the Nene alive, which is the most important bird in Hawaii, and the money they will pay can be a reason for that.

People who have big lands should let the Nene geese feel safe in their lands, but they should keep the wild animals away. “For some Nene, the grass really is greener on the other side and Volcano Golf and Country Club; is a favorite flocking area,” said the US Fed News (2006, par. 9). For some reasons the Nene like to build their nests and breed in the golf or the country club; maybe the people over there are more educated and know how to act near the Nene geese. The Government should educate people everywhere in Hawaii about the Nene, about how they supposed to react if some came near them, and about what they should do. The best things to do is educating the landowners and finding the ways that could help the Nene to feel safe and build some nests in these lands. The landowners have the lands and they live in Hawaii, or maybe they do not, but this is a way they can be very helpful to the Hawaiian bird. Some of the landowners will say that even if I own the land I didn't get it for free and I should get paid for that. I agree with the landowners, but the Government can do a helpful thing in this matter, which can be done in several ways; one of the ways is giving the landowners who will agree to have the Nene geese in their lands a discount in their taxes, which will help the owners to make their decisions very easily; moreover, the Government could give landowners who agree to keep the Nene geese in their lands a lot of benefits for that, for example, they could have some facilities in some business if they like to do in Hawaii. The good thing about keeping the Nene geese in these lands is that they could live without being disturbed by dangerous cars that could hit them and kill them. According to US Fed News (2006), Nene who live near to Pi`i Mauna are in danger because of cars and they could be injured or maybe killed. Nene geese could not feel safe near people, which could affect them in their breeding season and could stop them from building their nests. One of the dangerous things that the lands could save them from are the wild animals like the wild pigs; those animals are very dangerous to the Nene geese, which are a delicious meal to them. For this reason landowners must work with the Government to build some fences around the land, so they can keep anyone from getting close to Nene geese. “Working with many private landowners who own most of the low-elevation lands is essential to their continued recovery, and safe Harbor agreements are a key part of this work” said Environmental Defense (n. d. par. 6).

Nene geese are not afraid of humans for some reasons. For that they have a big problem now. According to Instant Hawaii (n. d., par. 5), “They are inquisitive birds and their protected status means they have lost some fear of humans. They will often stroll over to check out some activity they feel threatens their space”, this situation could cause death to them if someone came to their area and shot them. Nene are one of the trusting animals on the planet, and for that they always have been in many dangerous situations and sometimes killed because of that. The reason for this situation is that they did not get in the wildlife; they lived near people who at the same time tried not to hurt them and actually protect them from dangerous animals. People brought wild animals with them when they came to Hawaii; wild pigs that lived in Hawaii like the Nene geese; these animals became very dangerous to the Nene geese. The Nene geese don't run away if they came to them to eat them; they just stand for them as if they like saying come and eat me. These problems were caused by human in the first place; they protected them more than they are supposed to and the Nene geese became very trusting of everyone. For example, if a Nene goose came in front of a car, the driver would stop and wait for them until they go away from his way. If the Nene lived outside the protection he had some day, the Nene geese will know what is dangerous for him and what is not and he will start to get back his old habits. “It is generally believed that rare a (sic) and endangered species like the Nene should be left in their natural habitats and that action should be take to protect them within their environment” (Ladywildlife, n.d. par. 8). For this they should breed more of them and try to get more to let some of them in the wild and let them try to succeed there. Although, this may take some time, it is worthwhile to do.

In conclusion, first, the government and people in Hawaii must pay more money to save the Nene, the most important bird in Hawaii. Second, the Government of Hawaii should contact people who have big lands to educate them about Nene geese and put some of them in their lands. Finally, the people who are in charge of the Nene geese should let a few of them go to let them learn how to be aware of the danger around them.

Reference:

Environmental Defense (n. d.). The U.S Fish & Wildlife Service described the Nene (par 1), “This regal goose is Hawai‘i’s state bird. The Nene measures between 22 to 26 inches in length, has a black head and bill, yellow-buff cheeks, a buff neck with dark furrows, and partially webbed between their toes enables them to walk more easily on the rugged lava flows.” They were found in Hawaii and scientists believe that they were in Hawaii before 1778 when Captain James Cook arrived, said U.S Fish & Wildlife Service. I still need a book to help me describe the problem in ways that are more powerful.

Reference:

Ladywildlife (n.d.). Save the Nene Goose. This disease and some other diseases came from North America by flying birds to Hawaii. However, the diseases may come and spread by mosquitoes or humans that come to Hawaii. In addition, if the program that the company started has been successful, the vaccine maybe used to protect the species in Hawaii, specially the endangered species. Business Wire quoted David Watumull as saying, “This program helps demonstrate how biotechnology can help our community.”

I believe that this program is great; companies should do more research about other diseases.

I think the Hawaii Government should support companies that do research about vaccines to protect Nene birds. Like humans, birds also have diseases that could harmful for them and could make them die. People who care so much about Nene birds and Hawaii, especially the rich people in Hawaii, could help with this by paying money to the companies to do research about diseases that could be harmful for Nene birds.

I believe that people in Hawaii could help save Nene from the West Nile virus. One of the insects that spread this disease is a mosquito, people there could spray pesticide in places that had most of the Nene birds gathering; for an example, in Saudi Arabia about 10 years ago, we had millions of insects that came to Riyadh every year for 4 years in a row. Some of these insects have diseases. The Government in Riyadh had to bring machines, put them in trucks, and spray them around and inside the city to kill these insects, and that helped to solve the problem very well.

The zoo in Hawaii could help protect the Nene from this disease by putting them in special places that can save them from any disease that could hurt theme in any different way. Maybe they could build a shelter for them in case dangerous diseases came to Hawaii.

In conclusion, the Government of Hawaii should support the companies that do research about diseases and the Nene birds. People in Hawaii could help with this problem by spraying pesticide around the places that had Nene in it. Many things helped this breeding to succeed, the weather is one for the big reasons of this breeding season, and it was raining most of the year and kept the trees green and the vegetables growing. Also the visitors helped with this by telling the staff about the birds and the nets to help protect them. At the end of the article the author mentioned several things to protect the Nene at the golf course, like not feeding them, not driving fast in their area, and not bringing dogs to the golf course.

I think the Nene is one of the most important birds in Hawaii and we should protect it in any possible way.

In my opinion, I think the Government of Hawaii should build a refuge for Nene birds to stay safe and ensure that nothing hurt them, like cars or wild animals or any dangerous thing that could be harmful for nene birds. I believe that nene birds need a big place so they can build their nests in it and live in peace. Maybe the government of Hawaii should be involved in this issue; they could use experts in these situations who had done this before and call them and see what they say about this.

One of the ways to help protect and save the nene birds is helping them to find food easily. If it’s not easy for them or they had trouble finding it, then people must help them or even feed them, I don't think it’s something hard; people may go in the areas that Nene birds gather in and leave the food in it and go away. But they should do research first to find out what kind of food Nene birds like; maybe when they bring the kind of food they will not eat it. It’s like feeding the chicken in someone house or any kind of animals its just something simple.

Finally, I think the Government of Hawaii should keep people away from the places Nene bird stay in or live in, not just put signs in these areas. They could make some rules that stop people from driving their cars in some specific areas; maybe the cars are one of the things that kill Nene birds or maybe scare them away, and stop them from potting their nests in some places.

In conclusion, first the Government of Hawaii should provide a refuge to keep Nene birds and save them there. Second, helping Nene birds to find food or maybe feeding them is one of the ways to save them and help them to build their nests and breed well. Finally, The Government of Hawaii should keep people away from the places Nene birds live in.

Reference:

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park celebrates most successful Nene breeding season ever. There are more whales traveling to Hawaii from other places. The boat drivers are supposed to drive slowly and be careful and there are other rules they need to follow. One of the problems is that the experts do not know what happens with the injured whales.

I believe that collisions are something difficult to control and we should just leave it as it is.

I think the crashing between boats and whales is something hard to stop. One of the reasons is that the sea is the whales world; that means if you want to stop the crashes you must stop boats from sailing in the sea and this is something impossible to do, just like the accidents happening between deer and cars in America; no one can stop people from driving and at the same time no one can stop deer from walking around.

I think the tourists are one of the main reasons of the crashing between the boats and the whales, so we could even stop the tourists from going to Hawaii or just leave the problem behind our back and don't think about it. I cannot think about a solution that can stop the crashes and keep the tourists going to Hawaii. In addition, I believe that we should keep the people going there because I think people are more important than animals.
Whales are one the biggest living animals in the planet, so I think it’s hard to move them or control their life in any way. So it’s not easy to say stop the crashing. In my opinion, letting the whales live, as they like is the easiest and cheapest, and affective way to handle this issue.

In conclusion, I think no one can stop crashes between boats and whales. Tourists are one of the main reasons for the crashes. Leaving the whales is the best way to handle this problem.

Reference:

Hawaii whales at risk from boats. BBC News. (2006, May 8). It has a relatively longer neck and smaller head than the other bear species” as the International Fund for animal Welfare describe it (2006, par. 1). They are dying because the ice is melting. They have to swim a long distance between the ice pieces to search for food. Sometimes they travel for maybe more than 20 miles, and they die trying. “Polar bears are strong swimmers; they are adapted for swimming close to the shore. Their sea journeys leave them vulnerable to exhaustion, hypothermia or being swamped by waves” says Will Iredale in his article (2005, par. 12). The main reason for this is the climate change. The temperature is rising and there is more heat; because of that the ice is melting and the bears are having trouble because of that. There are 22,000 who live in many sites and this number is declining according to Mr. Iredale, in his article (2005). There is a movement in the United States to put the polar bears on the endangered species list, but the Bush administration has refused it, according to National Geographic (2006). Driving cars is one of the reasons that make the heat of the climate rise. In the city of Churchill there are many tourists who come every year to see polar bears in the wild. In this small city in the summer, because of the ice melting, the polar bears come to look for food and a place to stay. One of the big problems is the temperature is rising and it is affecting the climate. “There is much debate over whether human activities are now or will soon be intensifying the natural greenhouse effect, thereby rising the earth’s average temperature (global warming) and changing the climate found in various parts of the world,” says G. Tyler Miller, an adjunct professor of human ecology. Finally, every year there are more bears dying because of food or because they are trying to swim long distances and die trying. Three things should be done to help the polar bears.

The White House must make a law that protects polar bears and put them on the endangered species list. They are the only government body that can do that. They have the power to do that and they should do it. The main problem is that no one believed that the global warming was real true, until this year. “The Bush administration has agreed to study whether polar bears should be added to the nation’s endangered species list because global warming is shrinking their habitat,” said Juliet Eilperin, a Washington Post staff writer (2006, par. 1). Not only is the global warming is killing them, the hunters are too, they hunt the polar bear for fun or for their fur. Wayne Pacelle of Humane Society International said; "its grotesque -like selling tickets to a slaughterhouse. It will put added pressure on the bear just as global warming has been identified as a threat to its survival.” When bears are in danger these means they will disappear and will be in the past, they will be like dinosaurs, a history. For that the government is responsible for all that and they should work this out, find the solution and work to do it. There is a movement from a group to make the government do something to protect the polar bears, “The lawsuit, filed in federal court in San Francisco, demands that the government take action on a petition environmentalists filed earlier to have polar bears listed as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act” said Dan Joling, in Groups to Protect Polar Bears (2005, par. 2).

There must be cooperation between the countries that have polar bears in their lands to protect them. One country can do nothing; no one can do any thing effective to protect the polar bears on his own; the more cooperation happens the more solution we have to save and protect the polar bears. Russia, USA, Canada and other countries all have polar bears in their lands, and if the countries work together they will find better solutions; they could make a law that prevents hunting the polar bears under any condition, and put them under law protection. Some hunters will still hunt the polar bears unless they know there is a punishment going to be against them.

People must know that the bears are dying because of their cars, and they should do something about it. When anyone drives his car, there is a gas comes out from the car that affects the atmosphere and the climate; these gasses come every year from the cars or the factories or the airplanes or maybe the air conditioners. Most people don’t know about that and some of them don’t care even if they know that. They could use many other kinds of transportation that have no effect on the climate. Bikes are one of the good solutions they may use and don’t do a harmful thing to the atmosphere; people can use the bike to go to places near to them and just use the car for long trips or if they want to move something or maybe if they want to travel, but use the bike inside the town, maybe for college or to the supermarket. On the other hand, they may go on their feet; I know it’s hard for some people but if they could do that they should. If they can’t ride a bike or walk, they could use the bus; the buses go to all places in most of the towns, and they have like abort schedule for that. Or maybe they could use the metro in big cities. The best thing not using a car is that you are saving money; how much gas do you put in your car? I know that my friend fuels his car every week with more than $80; isn’t that expensive ? The oil is rising now and there are no signs that he is going down in short time. So after all that, do you still want to use your car? Killing the bears with the car gasses and paying more money for the fuel, maybe people should think about it in this way. On the other hand, the government is responsible to make the transportation easy and every where, downtown and out of town, build more subways and make it go everyplace in town, and build fast trains to go between cities so people don’t need to use cars.

So in conclusion, polar bears have a problem from the climate change; the global warming is affecting them and they have trouble finding their food. To solve this problem the White House must make a law to protect the polar bears, countries that have polar bears in their lands must cooperate with each other to protect them from dying, and finally people must use bikes or trains beside the cars.

References:

Joling, d (15 Dec 2005). Sometimes they travel for maybe more than 20 miles, and they die trying. “Polar bears are strong swimmers, they are adapted for swimming close to the shore. There are 22,000 polar bears live in many sites and this number is declining, according to Mr. Iredale in his article (2005). In this small city in the summer, because of the ice melting the polar bears come to look for food and a place to stay. Finally every year there are more bears dying because of food or because they are trying to swim long distances and die trying.

Three things should be done to help the polar bears. First, the White House must make a law that protects polar bears and put them on the endangered species list. Second, there must be cooperation between the countries that have polar bears in their lands to protect them. Third, people must know that the bears are dying because of their cars, and they should do something about it.

References:

National Geographic, (2006). In the summer when the ice melts, the bears come to the land and they start to be hungry. Tourists come and fill every bed in the town to see the polar bears in the wild. You can see in almost every street and building in this town a sign warning about the polar bears. There is a safe way to see the bears; you can ride Tundra Buggy, and it is a huge mammoth truck. Sometimes you can see young bears fight with each other.
I think it is an interesting town. I am also surprised that bears outnumber than humans. It’s like a bear’s town. Maybe I will visit this town some day. After I read this article, I was excited about this town; when I finished reading the article; I went away with my imagination and started to picture this town in my head. I think it is an interesting town.
I really feel sad about these bears; when the summer come they don’t have houses to stay in, and they start looking for a place where they can find food and a home, and all of that is because of the sea ice melting. They are forced to leave their home because of us. They did not do anything wrong. The people must do something about bears leaving their home. After all, they are the reason for that.
One of the interesting things about it is that tourists can see the bears in the wild, and the most important thing is being safe at the same time. You cannot find that in every city, especially for the polar bears. I think it is great; you can ride in one of the mammoth trucks and watch the bears fight or eat and not be afraid of them at the same time. I think this town should be thankful for this. Not every town has polar bears, after all. They make money because of the tourists and they should spend some of it for the bears. I hope I can visit this town some day.

Reference:
Jenny Stevens, (2006, Jan 8). Meltdown in polar bears kingdom. Sunday Mail (QLD). The global warming is melting the ice. Because of that the polar bears are in danger. Driving cars and the smoke of there cars getting in to the atmosphere is one of the reasons of the warming in the world. If the polar bears get in to the White House's protection, they will be the first mammals there. If the ice melt's we will see no ice in the summer by 2040. Polar bears are now fasting more than ever. In north Alaska, they die trying to swim between ice and land.
I think the White House must do something about the polar bears. They are suffering because of the global warming. Because of that, there is less ice and food. One of the reasons for the heat is the car, it fill in the air with gasses that are very bad for the atmosphere.
The White House is the head of the United State and the worl, if they do not do something about that, who will? Most of the people don't care about the polar bears and some of them don't know anything about them and some don't even care. My point is if the White House did not do anything about that, no one would do it.
I really feel sad about the polar bears; their world is falling down and besides, they are suffering to find food and all of that is because of the global warming. I think we really should do something. They travel long distances to find food and sometime they die trying to get it. It’s something crazy as the article said; they found some of them dead in the sea trying to find food! Why? If the warming is still increasing, someday the one who is trying to get food will be us; we will find trouble living in the world.
I do not think the car is one of the big reasons; there are factories and other big deals. Of curse, most of the people can live without a car, but you cannot do all your work, shopping, or anything else without a car.

Reference:
National Geographic (2006, Feb 18). They have to swim a long distance in the sea to find food, but sometimes they get away from the shore because of waves and they couldn't make it back and die. They hunt near the edge to get food to there young; most of the time they have trouble in is June and October because it's the summer. The problem is that every year there is more water than before.

I think we should take this problem more seriously; for now maybe just the polar bears but years later it's going to be serious trouble for all species. There is more heat because of the cars and the factories; I think we should make more rules for the factories, and we shouldn't drive old cars that are bad for nature.

The problem is people don't care about it, they hear in the news and feel sad but after a while they forgot all about it. They must make the governments do something, make rules and take it more seriously. They have to save the arctic ice shelf by doing more research about the problem and the solution for it.

In my opinion the ozone hole is one of the biggest causes for the heat; it makes more heat get in to the earth and that makes the ice melt, and it's getting bigger every year. I'm not sure what the reason is but we should take this problem more seriously and look for the solution.

One of the problems is the green house gasses; there are making the heat get in but not get out. The governments I think have started to look out for it, they make some rules on the factories and the cars, but I think that's not enough. I'm not a scientist, but they should do more than that. Every year the heat temperature is getting high because if this problem, and this ice is melting more every day.

Reference:

Iredale, W. He defines stressors physical and emotional demands on us and applied our emotional and physical reaction to such stimuli. They interfere or threaten our accustomed way of life . When we face such stressors we must deal with it by polling together our self and try to find the solution for it. Both human and animals react to any stressor in three stages known as the general adaptation syndrome according to Seyle. First be aware of the stressor, second comes the resistance. If the second stage works or the person will continue being in stress and this is the third stage of exhaustion or collapse . In humans its harder to predict what will be stressful to a same person at the same time. Its depends on the persons subjective appraisal of the stress. The specific stress reaction is likely to vary widely; some stressful situations give rise predominantly to emotion of fear, some to anger, some to helplessness and depression.

Reference : SEAL,B .
